How To Get More Energy At Work? Filter Out Artificial Light

Article at a glance:

This article will teach you how to get more energy and productivity at work by filtering out artificial light.

  • With advances in new technology and longer work hours, more and more people are spending extended periods of time under artificial lighting and in front of digital devices with LED screens.
  • Over exposure to junk light throughout the day can lead to circadian rhythm disruption and make it difficult to fall asleep at night.
  • There are several light hacks that you can implement to help stop junk light in your work space, such as choosing healthier light bulbs and wearing blue light blocking glasses.
  • Being more proactive about your office lighting can help improve your energy, focus, mood, and productivity.

What Is Circadian Rhythm?

Your natural circadian rhythm is aligned with the rise and fall of the sun, not with the use of your laptop, smartphone or tablet.

If we were cavemen and cavewomen who lived by natural light from the sun, moon and stars as humans and animals did for the last few thousand years, all would be well with our waking and sleep patterns. Sunshine is made of a large color spectrum, with a lot of “blue”, so our eyes tell our brains and our bodies that “blue = daytime”.

However when the light bulb was invented about 140 years ago, things starting changing for us. Artificial light also contains a lot of “blue”. Our bodies had spent 200,000-ish years learning that blue light means be awake, and a lack of blue, violet and green light means fall asleep. Now humans have a tool that lets them be awake and active past dark and, or get up before the sun rises. 140 years isn’t enough for human biology to adjust to the new reality.

This means that blue light is both blue light is both good and bad for you. Like cavemen and women, you need some blue light, but not all of the man-made, overly bright blue light spectrum happening at the wrong time(s) of day. The timing and amount acts as like junk light to your natural circadian rhythm. The result is tired eyes, tired brains and tired bodies for much of the modern day population.

It’s made worse by modern day electronics like computers, smartphones  and fluorescent light bulbs. These devices put out much more blue light than the original light bulb — almost as much blue light as the sun. So when we’re around this spectrum of light, our brains think it’s daytime…even if it’s really bedtime.

How Exposure To Junk Light Affects Your Energy and Brain Function

Recent studies have shown that over-exposure to artificial light at the wrong time of day can have negative effects on your sleep and, in turn, your mental and physical performance during the day. Light is the most potent cue that our bodies use to synchronize biological activity, including when to wake up and when to sleep. In today’s world, with hours spent in front of  electronics and in harsh overhead light environments, daytime is artificially extended — therefore impacting our neurotransmitters and hormones that are responsible for quality sleep.

Your Work Space Is Bombarded By Junk Light

Do you work in front of a computer for extended periods of time? Do you sit under harsh fluorescent or LED lighting at your office? Have you ever noticed how many lights are actually surrounding you and, or that you’re looking at throughout your typical work day? The next time you go to work….take a look, you might be shocked.

Computers, tablets, televisions and mobile phones are all culprits of emitting artificial blue light from their LED screens. The longer you stare at and use them, the more likely you are to:

  • Get eye strain or headaches
  • Feel fatigued
  • Have a harder time falling asleep later at night

You can prevent these health concerns by proactively shielding your eyes from the blue light in your work environment with these tools:

TrueDark® Daylights work by providing you with the proper amount of blue light during the day. You can think of it like the Goldilocks of the blue light protection army. Not too much, not too little…just the right amount of blue for your mind and body.

TrueDark® Daylights:

  • Prevent your eyes and brain from having over exposure to blue light
  • Allows a healthy amount of the light spectrum to reach your eyes and brain
  • Helps you stay awake, alert and productive during daytime and work hours
  • Prevents eye strain and headaches

TrueDark® Dots:

TrueDark® Dots allow you completely cover the small colored lights that can be found in the corner of computer and television screens, on power cords, or along the floors of your office if it has lighting as a part of its design. Simply place the dot over the light so that the blue (or green) disappears from your vision.

  • Are reusable and designed to block the harmful light frequencies that impact your biology
  • Remove subtle distractions from your vision while you’re at work
  • Help preserve your natural circadian rhythm
