It emits specific wavelengths of light to restore, repair, and protect body tissue that is either injured, degenerating, or at risk of dying. While varying wavelengths affect the body differently, the most effective wavelengths for red light therapy and healing range from 625nm-900nm. How does red light therapy work?
Red light wavelengths affect bodily cells on a biochemical level by increasing mitochondrial function – the ability to produce cellular energy. The more cellular energy production, the better the body functions as a whole. When red light wavelengths are used on the skin’s surface, they can penetrate 8-10 millimeters into the skin.
What are the beneﬁts of red-light therapy?
Red light therapy works from the inside-out to enhance mitochondrial function in cells. This, in turn, leads to several skin beneﬁts. Why speciﬁcally use 630nm, 660nm, and 850nm wavelengths?
Various research projects promote the beneﬁts of different wavelengths for the treatment of certain conditions. It is generally agreed that wavelengths between 625nm and 900nm are the most effective for healing wounds and other skin conditions. At the lower end, 630nm and 660nm appear to be favored. At longer wavelengths, 850nm and 880nm are the most beneﬁcial.
A University of Chicago study discovered that the average wavelength of cell tissue in the human body ranges between 600nm and 720nm, with 660nm being the mid-point. 660nm works better than any other frequency because it is closer to the resonant frequency of cell tissue, allowing it to absorb better in hemoglobin. This is a red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in our blood. Your mitochondria can absorb red light easily at the 630nm and 660nm wavelengths, which roughly coincide with the absorption peaks of cytochrome c oxidase (the target of light therapy).
The mitochondria’s metabolic function is usually restricted by a biologically active molecule called nitric oxide, which binds to cytochrome c oxidase and prevents it from using oxygen. Red light detaches this molecule, allowing cytochrome c oxidase to resume its energy-producing metabolic function.

It has been discovered that when LED lights are pulsed, body tissue can heal more rapidly. When it is given a continuous burst, it sedates the cell and relieves the pain.
